Section 172 Statement

Last updated: March 12, 2025

This statement covers Nova’s House Ltd and all group subsidiary companies including Skylight Children’s Care Homes.

Introduction

The Managing Director confirms that they have effectively implemented their duties under section 172 of the Companies Act 2006. The Company has evaluated the long-term business strategy outlined below and believes that this approach will continue to ensure sustained success for both the business and its stakeholders.

The Company is committed to maintaining an excellent reputation and strives to achieve high standards for children. We are highly selective about who we work alongside to deliver best value while maintaining an awareness of the social work we carry out.

The Director acknowledges the significance of diverse stakeholders in implementing our strategy and attaining sustainability for the business. Key contributors to this effort include our employees, caregivers, the young people in our care, and our Local Authority Partners. Their role in the business is discussed below.

By engaging all our stakeholders in the process of organisational and service development, we believe we are promoting fairness amongst all members of our community.

Stakeholder Engagement

Skylight Children’s Care Homes’ mission is to provide outstanding care and plentiful opportunities that enable children/young people to flourish. This is undertaken in a safe, supportive and nurturing environment that is non-institutional, promoting family-style living as a positive experience within the home. We achieve this by ensuring that robust operational practices drive the business’ success.

The lasting impacts of Covid-19, the pandemic, academic changes continue to be felt alongside high inflation, increasing interest rates and the ‘cost of living crisis’. Our staff consistently demonstrate exceptional resilience while delivering essential services to our children and young people. The dedication, skills, and effort of our team are again evident in our inspection results, which exceed sector standards.

We recruit staff who can be positive role models for the child/young person in our care. Each child is allocated a key worker based on compatibility/interests, and this key worker remains constant throughout the child’s time living at Nova House, wherever possible. The Registered Manager and Deputy Manager are regularly available to communicate with the young person, actively listen, accept feedback, and ensure the young person has the tools and sense of psychological safety to express opinions about their care. The service constantly adapts and develops to reflect the views of the young people living at Nova House, as well the opinions of others involved in their care.

At Skylight Children’s Care Homes, we believe in offering our children/young people a safe, nurturing, and child-centred environment, where they can build positive and purposeful relationships with others. We aim to make their home a place where they can learn new skills, have new experiences, and feel physically and psychologically safe – this is achieved by creating an environment where they feel valued, listened to, and understood. The young people at Skylight Children’s Care Homes are encouraged to have fun, be child-like, play games and express themselves creatively.

The home implements positive structure and child-centered routines to ensure the young person feels safe and assured – this may be especially important for young people who have experienced adversity, upheaval, or a lack of consistency. We use individualised Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) approaches to proactively prevent unhelpful/unsafe behaviours, and reward and encourage desired or ‘positive’ behaviours. Within this approach, we understand that ‘behaviours of concern’ or unhelpful behaviours serve a function for the young person and are often a form of communication, or the best way of getting needs met that the child/young person currently has.

The Director of Skylight Children’s Care Homes is committed to fulfilling their Section 172 duties under the Companies Act 2006. We will remain committed to prioritising the interests of our looked-after children, employees, suppliers, customers, the community, and the environment as we strive to enhance the success of our children’s services.
